Sinhalese is an Indo-Aryan language and thus belongs to the Indo-European languages, most closely related to the Dhivehi spoken in the Maldives. In 1956, the Sri Lankan Freedom Party replaced English with Sinhalese as the national language -a key point in the development of ethnic discontent between the Sinhalese majority and Tamils minority. Today both languages are official languages. Sinhalese is spoken by about 16 million people as their native language, a large part of the other inhabitants of Sri Lanka speak it as a second language. Sinhalese has its own writing system, derived from the Indian Brahmi script. The oldest Sinhalese inscriptions date back to the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, while the oldest surviving literary works date back to the 9th century AD. Sinhalese belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of Indo-European languages and its closest relative is Dhivehi, the language spoken in the Maldives. During the 5th century BC, settlers from Northwestern India reached the island of Sri Lanka, bringing with them an Indo-Aryan language. In the following centuries, an admixture of features occurred due to substantial immigration from Northeastern India (Kalinga, Magadha).
