Turkish is the most commonly spoken language of the Turkic people, with Turkish native speakers making up about 40% of all Turkic speakers. It is the mother tongue of 63-70 million people worldwide, primarily in Turkey and Cyprus, with smaller groups in Iraq, Greece, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Romania, Serbia and other parts of Eastern Europe. In addition, Turkish is spoken in Western Europe by several million immigrants, in Germany alone there are about two million Turkish-speaking people. It is estimated that about 20 million people learn it as a second language. The roots of the language can be traced back to Central Asia, with written records dating back to nearly 1,200 years ago. Ottoman Turkish was the immediate forerunner of today's Turkish, whose influence grew with the expansion of the empire. In 1928, in the early years of the Republic of Turkey, the Ottoman script was replaced by a phonetic variant of the Latin alphabet, and the language reformed by replacing Persian and Arabic loan words with native Turkish variants.
