Tamil belongs to the Southern branch of the Dravidian languages and is their most important representative. Tamil is the official language in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, one of the official languages of India, Sri Lanka and Singapore. In addition, there are minorities of Tamil speakers in many countries around the world, including Malaysia, Mauritius, South Africa, Northern South America and Europe. It is estimated that more than 60 million people worldwide speak Tamil as mother tongue or second language. Tamil literature has existed for over two thousand years, with the earliest-found epigraphic records dating back to the Third century BC and Tamil inscriptions in Egypt belonging to the 1st century BC. More than 55% (about 55,000) of the epigraphical inscriptions found by the Archaeological Survey of India are in the Tamil language. Typologically it is an agglutinating language and there are numerous dialects, which differ in some cases significantly from the written language. Many words were taken from Sanskrit and later from English.
