Estonian belongs to the Finnish branch of the Finno-Ugric language family and is most closely related to Finnish. It is the official language of Estonia, although only about 1 million people speak it as their native language, as the large Russian minority in Estonia only learns it as a second language. It is also an official language of the European Union. Due to its fundamentally different grammar and vocabulary, it is very difficult to learn. In contrast to Finnish, there are a higher number of loan words, especially from the Low German of the Hanseatic League, Russian and Latvian. A special feature are 3 different vocal lengths: there are short, long and extra-long vowels. It is one of the few European languages that is not Indo-European. Despite the existence of a vocabulary coming from its neighbours, Estonian is not related to Swedish, Latvian or Russian, all of which are Indo-European languages. Estonian is only remotely related to Hungarian and there is no mutual intelligibility between the two. Over the years it has been influenced by Swedish, Central German and German, Russian and Latvian. The Estonian language has adopted almost a third of its vocabulary from Germanic languages.
