Georgian is the most widely used South Caucasian language. It is the official language in Georgia, where it is spoken by about 4 million people as a mother tongue and is learned by the minorities in the country as a second language. Georgian is the literary language for all the regional subgroups of Georgian ethnos, including those who speak other South Caucasian or Cartharian languages (i.e. H. Svans, Mingrelians, Laz). Judaeo-Georgian, sometimes considered a separate Jewish language, is spoken by another 20,000 in Georgia and 65,000 elsewhere (primarily 60,000 in Israel). The earliest allusion to spoken Georgian may have been in the 2nd century AD. After the conversion of the Georgian elite to Christianity in the middle of the 4th century, Georgian became a written language that led to a new literary language based on the functions, conventions and status of the Aramaic and the new national religion. The first Georgian inscriptions, palimpsests and literary works were written in the 5th century. It uses its own, extremely beautiful script, called Mchedruli.
