Romansh belongs to the Rhaeto-Romance set of languages of the Romance language sub-family. It is spoken in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland and is the fourth official language of Switzerland. According to the latest estimates available, some 35 thousand people define Romansh as their language of “best command”, while 61 thousand people say they regularly speak the language. The written language, the so-called Romantsch Grischun, was only recently created artificially as a balance between the dialects and is not used orally. The language closest to Romansh is Italian, more specifically the dialects of Lombardy in Northern Italy. Romansh developed from a dialect of provincial Latin spoken in the Central Alps, but it also retains a small number of words from Celtic and Raetic, the languages previously spoken in the area, and was exposed to the influence of German. It breaks down into 5 dialects (Sursilvan, Sutsilvan, Surmiran, Puter and Vallader), whose differences are quite large.
