Nepali (also called Gorkhali, Gurkhali, Parbatiya, Lhotshammikha) is a language in the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family. With 66 million speakers, it is the lingua franca of Nepal and is also spoken in Bhutan, parts of India and parts of Myanmar (Burma). It is one of 23 official languages of India and has official language status in the formerly independent state of Sikkim and in West Bengal's Darjeeling district, and is widely spoken in the states of Uttaranchal and Assam. Nepali is the easternmost of the Pahari languages, a group of related languages spoken at the foothills of the Himalayas. The influence of the Nepali language can be seen in Bhutan and some parts of Burma, while Tibeto-Burman languages, most notably Nepal Bhasa, have influenced Nepali. Closely related to Hindi, Nepali is more conservative, borrowing fewer words from Persian and English and using more Sanskritic derivations. It is mutually intelligible with Hindi and Urdu. Like Sanskrit and Hindi, today Nepali is commonly written in the Devanagari script. A great amount of Nepali literature developed within a short 100-year period in the Nineteenth century.
