Latin is the language of the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church and as such has had a far-reaching influence on almost all European languages. The Latin script is the most widely used script in the world and was derived from Greek writing. Latin was originally the language of the Latin tribe and became the most important language of antiquity and the Middle Ages through its rise to the Roman Empire. Typologically speaking, Latin is an inflecting language, its grammatical rules have fundamentally shaped the European understanding of grammar. The classical phase of Latin dates back only to about a century after Christ’s birth, after which the spoken vulgar Latin in Romance languages, Latin as the administrative and vernacular language in many European countries and the church Latin used by the Church until the modern age developed. Nowadays, Latin lives on in the form of Ecclesiastical Latin used by the Catholic Church. Much Latin vocabulary is used in science, academia, and law. Classical Latin is still taught in many schools, often combined with Greek in the study of Classics, though its role has diminished since the early 20th century.
