Cambodian (Khmer) is one of the Mon-Khmer languages and is the second most widely spoken Austroasiatic language after Vietnamese. It is the official language of Cambodia. In addition, Khmer is also spoken in Vietnam, Thailand and other emigration countries. The speakers of Khmer are over 15 million. Khmer uses its own writing and differs from the neighbouring languages, with which there was a mutual influence. Thus, Khmer was considerably influenced by Sanskrit and Pali, especially through the vehicles of Hinduism and Buddhism. Cambodian is the earliest recorded and written language of the Mon-Khmer family, predating Mon and, by a significant margin, Vietnamese. Cambodian has affected and has been affected by Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Cham, primarily due to geographic proximity, but differs from these languages in that it is not a tonal language. There is mutual intelligibility between all its main dialects: Battambang, Phnom Penh, Northern Khmer (Khmer Surin), Khmer Krom (Southern Khmer), and Cardamom Khmer. Cambodian employs its own script, known in Khmer as Aksar Khmer.
