Italian is a Romance language and, in many ways, the closest to Latin among all Romance languages. Italian is an official language in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino and the Vatican. It is also the recognised language of minorities in Slovenia and Croatia. Moreover, it is spoken in Corsica in dialect form and there is a large Italian diaspora in several American countries. The number of people who speak Italian as their native language is over 70 million. The dialects are numerous in Italy and quite different from each other, and the written language is based on the dialect of Tuscany. While its development was also influenced by the other Italian dialects and by the Germanic language of the post-Roman Barbaric invaders, it has been, first and foremost, directly and heavily influenced by Latin. Italian is the closest modern language to Latin in terms of vocabulary and, unlike most other Romance languages, it has retained the contrast between short and long consonants that existed in Latin. It also retains the distinctive stress, as with most other Romance languages. Through its open, clearly spoken vowels it is considered very melodious and good for singing, especially for the opera.
