The Croatian language is a South Slavic language like Serbian and Bosnian. It is the official language of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as minority language in Vojvodina, and is spoken by about 5 million people. Due to a large diaspora, the number of people speaking Croatian is well over 20 million. Croatian originated from the former Serbo-Croatian state language of Yugoslavia, which has fallen apart after the independence of the individual republics into national single languages. Linguistically speaking, whether the languages that originated from the former Serbo-Croatian language spoken in Yugoslavia are independent languages or national varieties of the same language remains controversial. The grammatical system and the basic vocabulary are largely identical, even if there are small differences, and the dialects do not coincide with the state borders, so a mutual understanding is usually possible without any problems. All this clearly points to varieties of a pluricentric language. One difference is that Bosnian and Croatian are written in Latin script, while Serbian is written in Cyrillic script.
