Afrikaans is a West Germanic language spoken in South Africa, Namibia and, to a lesser extent, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It is considered as a daughter language of Dutch, as it evolved from the Dutch language spoken by the mainly Dutch settlers of what is now known as South Africa. Indeed, the term "Afrikaans" has derived from the Dutch expression “Afrikaans-Hollands”, meaning "African Dutch". The language is believed to have started developing distinguishing characteristics from Dutch during the 18th century. It is estimated that approximately 90-95% of Afrikaans words are of Dutch origins, although it has also adopted words from languages that include Portuguese, the Bantu languages, Malay, and German. Consequently, there is a large degree of mutual intelligibility between Afrikaans and the Dutch languages. Afrikaans is spoken by 7 million people in South Africa, which accounts for 13.5% of the population, and is the third most widely spoken language in the country. In neighbouring Namibia, Afrikaans is widely spoken as a second language and used as a lingua franca. It is estimated that the total number of Afrikaans speakers worldwide ranges between 15 and 23 million.
